EXCLUSIVE! Madame Monsieur about Mercy,Eurovision and the new album
There is no secret that the french entry this year is a hot favourite to win the Eurovision Sonmg Contest. We all know the story of Mercy, but the way Madame Monsieur put it into music is unique, soulful but at the same time it has that special thing that a good song has; nobody can say what it is…but it’s there. Emilie Satt and Jean-Karl Lucas formed the group in 2013, and since then they released one album called Tandem, and the seccond one is on it’s way. It will be called Vu d’ici, and you will find out a bit about it in this short interview. We thank them very much for taking the time to answer a few questions. First of all we want to congratulate them for an amazing entry this year and for all the promo tours they are doing, bringing Mercy closer to the audiences.
Escromania: How did you come up with the idea for this song. Was it specially written for Eurovision or it was an older idea that you transformed it into your entry for the contest?

MM:
Basically, I composed this song for this festival, we want to give a signal of alarm to the whole world about the tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea, our song talks a lot about these volunteers who choose to go to a simple mission and to prevent people from drowning in the sea. Beyond politics, there are people who die at sea and we have to save them. The song I wrote was after what happened to little Aylan and we made Mercy because Aylan was sad, and Mercy’s birth was not just that. There was something more to offer. The interest was this confrontation of many things: what people are willing to do to escape the horror, even a pregnant woman of nine months, are the SOS volunteers of the Mediterranean … And Aylan is also present in the choir that says ” I am all the children that the sea has taken in. Mercy symbolizes all these children, those born in improbable conditions like him, those who have been trapped in the situation, but Aylan represents only the shadow part of humanity and through Mercy is also the part of light.
Thank you very much Madame Monsieur and the best of luck in Lisbon!
